7 Nights for Umrah: How to Split Your Stay Between Makkah and Madinah
By the TravAir team · Published

Quick answer: for a seven-night Umrah trip, four nights in Makkah and three in Madinah is a sensible starting point. You get time to settle in, perform Umrah and spend unhurried days in both cities, with only one hotel change. Move the split around your flights, your family and the pace you like. It is a planning suggestion, not a religious requirement.
Book each part of the trip: flights on Kayak, TravelUp or Trip.com | Makkah hotels on Trip.com, Agoda or Hotels.com | Madinah hotels on Trip.com | transfers with Kiwitaxi | a Saudi eSIM from Airalo
A short trip works best with some breathing room. You want time to get back to the hotel after a long morning, eat together and sit in the mosque without one eye on the clock for the next outing.
The plan below keeps things simple: four nights in Makkah, the move to Madinah on day five, three nights there, then home on day eight. Treat it as a starting point and adjust it once your flight times are fixed.
Before you book: the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, which includes Makkah and Madinah, and warns of a heightened threat to airports in the country. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the latest FCDO advice for Saudi Arabia before you book anything, and check it again before you fly.
Count hotel nights, not days
Seven nights usually means eight local calendar days from your first check-in to your last check-out. Add the flights and your total time away from the UK can be longer.
Say you check in to your Makkah hotel on a Monday and check out on Friday. That is four nights. Check in to your Madinah hotel that Friday and leave on Monday, and that is three more. Friday is your travel day, not an extra night in either city.
Early arrivals need a little thought. If you land at dawn and want a room straight away, ask the hotel which night you need to book to be sure of it, and get the answer in writing. A late departure is the same problem in reverse: work out where you will rest and leave your bags after check-out.
A seven-night Umrah itinerary at a glance
| Day | Where you sleep | A comfortable plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Makkah, night 1 | Arrive, settle in and perform Umrah as planned |
| 2 | Makkah, night 2 | Time for worship, meals and getting over the journey |
| 3 | Makkah, night 3 | A full day in Makkah, with one optional visit if you want it |
| 4 | Makkah, night 4 | Your last full day in Makkah, at your own pace |
| 5 | Madinah, night 1 | Check out, travel between the cities and settle into the new hotel |
| 6 | Madinah, night 2 | Time at Masjid an-Nabawi, plus the Rawdah if you have a booking |
| 7 | Madinah, night 3 | Time at the mosque and an optional visit to Quba Mosque |
| 8 | No hotel night | Check out and take the transfer that fits your flight home |
The days are deliberately light, so you can move an optional visit or a rest without rebuilding the whole week.
Nights 1 to 4: give Makkah enough time
Arrival day
Save the hotel address, arrival instructions and transfer details on your phone before you leave the UK. If you are travelling with children or older relatives, decide in advance who keeps the documents together and who looks after the bags.
Sort out your ihram and miqat plans before you travel. Nusuk's official Umrah guide explains entering ihram at the miqat and completing the rites. Reaching your hotel does not end ihram. Follow your permit arrangements, and ask someone qualified if your situation needs individual advice.
Keep the rest of arrival day clear. Nothing else needs to compete with the reason you came.
Your full days in Makkah
Once Umrah is done and you have slept, let the next day find its own rhythm. You might spend the morning at the Haram, come back for lunch and a rest, then go back later. Families do well to agree a meeting point and a plan that works for everyone.
The extra nights give you a choice. If a cultural visit appeals, pick one from our Makkah attractions guide. If you would rather spend the time in the mosque, leave the afternoon open.
Hotel location matters because you will make the walk to the Haram several times a day. Compare the actual route from the hotel entrance to the part of the mosque you expect to use, along with the room layout and what meals are included. Our Makkah hotel guide and guide to hotel walking distances help with that. For a cheaper room further out, see our list of Makkah hotels with a free shuttle to the Haram.
Once you have a shortlist, search Agoda, Hotels.com, Trip.com and Expedia with the same dates, guests and room type, so you are comparing like with like.

Day 5: make the move between cities the main job
Have breakfast, finish packing and leave plenty of time to check out. Keep medicines, documents, chargers and anything you need on the way in one small bag you can reach easily.
The Haramain high-speed railway links Makkah and Madinah, with stations in Jeddah and at King Abdulaziz International Airport too. Its station services page lists taxis and shuttle services. When you plan the day, count the trip from your hotel to the station and from the station to your next hotel, not only the train.
If you are a family weighing up the train against a private car, compare the whole journey for everyone. Add the station transfers to the rail fares, then put that total next to the price of one vehicle big enough for all of you and the bags. Check current fares, departure times and luggage rules with the railway before you decide.
Our Umrah transfers guide goes through the options in more detail. If a car suits you better, Kiwitaxi lets you book a private transfer in advance. Enter the real hotel addresses and check that the vehicle takes all your passengers and luggage.
Once you reach Madinah, unpack enough to feel settled and keep the evening simple, especially if anyone is tired.
Nights 5 to 7: settle into Madinah
Three nights gives you an arrival evening and two full days before you leave. Choose a hotel that makes your visits to Masjid an-Nabawi easy, and check the entrance and walking route you expect to use. Our Madinah hotel guide helps you narrow down the area. Then compare rooms on Trip.com, Hotels.com or Agoda.
If you want to visit the Rawdah, book through the official Nusuk Rawdah service and plan the day around a confirmed appointment. Slots depend on availability, so no itinerary can promise you a visit on a particular day.
For an outing, think about Quba Mosque. Visit Madinah describes a walking trail linking it with the Prophet's Mosque, with places to sit along the way. Walk, take transport or mix the two, depending on the heat and how your group is feeling.
Keep your last evening free of long trips. It is nice to have time for a meal, get the bags ready and spend the evening as you like.
When does a different split work better?
Four and three is only one way to divide a week.
| Split | Why you might choose it |
|---|---|
| 4 Makkah + 3 Madinah | You want several full days in Makkah and two full days in Madinah |
| 3 Makkah + 4 Madinah | You would like a longer, quieter stay in Madinah after Umrah |
| 5 Makkah + 2 Madinah | Most of your time is for Makkah, with a shorter visit to Madinah |
You can also start in Madinah if your flights and preferences suit it. If you do, plan your miqat and ihram for the journey to Makkah separately rather than copying the arrival plan above.
Before you buy flights, compare a simple return with a ticket that lands in one city and leaves from the other, where suitable flights exist. Add any extra ground journey to the total, because the cheapest airfare is not always the cheapest trip.
Compare fares to Jeddah and Madinah on Kayak, which searches many airlines and travel sites at once, then check TravelUp and Trip.com. Check the full routing, baggage allowance and local arrival dates before you pay. If a flight is badly delayed or cancelled, AirHelp can check whether you are owed compensation.
Keep every booking in one place
Use our free DIY Umrah Planner to keep both hotel stays, your flights and your transfers together. Write the local check-in and check-out dates next to each booking, then add any confirmed Nusuk appointments.
Save offline copies of the important confirmations. For maps, messages and booking apps, an eSIM means you land with data. Check that your phone supports eSIM and read the activation rules before you buy. Airalo, Yesim and World eSIM (10% off with the code TRAVAIROFF) all sell Saudi Arabia plans, and our Saudi eSIM guide compares them.
Arrange travel insurance before you fly, and read what the policy says about FCDO advice. Globelink is one provider to compare, and our Umrah travel insurance guide lists what to check.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Makkah and Madinah in seven nights?
Yes. A common split is four hotel nights in Makkah and three in Madinah, with one travel day between them. Whether that pace suits you depends on your flights, health, mobility and how much time you want in each city.
Does seven nights mean seven days away from the UK?
No. Seven hotel nights cover eight local calendar days, and flights can add more. Check your UK departure and return dates separately, especially with overnight flights.
Do I have to split seven nights as four in Makkah and three in Madinah?
No. It is a planning suggestion, not a rule. Three nights in Makkah and four in Madinah, or five and two, can suit you better depending on your priorities and who you are travelling with.
Can I book a Rawdah visit for my arrival day in Madinah?
Only if Nusuk shows an available appointment and you leave enough time to arrive and check in first. Rawdah slots depend on availability, so book through Nusuk and plan that day around the confirmed time.
Are flights, hotels and transfers included in this itinerary?
No. This is a suggested plan for planning Umrah yourself, not a package. You book flights, hotels and transfers separately, directly with each provider.
Sources: we checked the official Nusuk, Haramain railway, Visit Madinah and FCDO pages on 25 October 2026. The night split and day plans are our own suggestions. Fares, room availability, train times and Nusuk appointments change, so check them for your dates, and follow the current official rules for your passport, health and travel dates.
