Quick answer: if a hotel beside the Haram is out of budget, stay a few kilometres out in a 3, 4 or 5 star hotel that runs a free shuttle bus. This guide lists 14 of them, from the Millennium and Le Méridien Towers at the top end to ibis Styles and Ramada for tighter budgets. You get a better room for the money, and in return you plan your visits to the Haram around the bus timetable. Compare prices for the same dates on Agoda, Trip.com and Hotels.com before you book.

A shuttle hotel is a hotel outside walking distance of Masjid al-Haram that runs its own bus to and from the Haram area for guests, usually at no extra cost. Below you will find what each hotel says about its shuttle, how often the bus runs where that is published, and links to check prices for each one on Agoda or Trip.com.

Why stay further out?

The towers around the Haram, in the Clock Tower complex and Jabal Omar, charge for their location. In busy months, a room you can walk to prayer from usually costs a lot more than a room of the same standard a few kilometres away.

Moving out of the centre lets you keep the things that make a long trip comfortable: a proper room, a good breakfast, a quieter street at night. What you give up is the freedom to drop in and out of the Haram whenever you like. Every visit becomes a bus ride, a walk from the drop-off point, and a wait for the bus back.

A 3-star shuttle hotel can be the best value of all. The rooms are simpler, but you still get a free bus to the Haram, and the money you save can go towards a few nights closer in, or a better hotel in Madinah.

How hotel shuttles in Makkah work

Hotel buses don't usually stop at the mosque door. Most drop guests at a bus station near the Haram, such as Rea Bakhsh, Ajyad or the King's Gate station by the Kudai car park, and you walk the rest of the way. The walk from the drop-off is often 5 to 10 minutes.

Timetables vary a lot. A few hotels, such as Mercure Makkah Aziziah, say their shuttle runs 24 hours a day. Others run a bus every 10 to 60 minutes and stop at prayer times. Guest reviews of shuttle hotels often mention queues for the bus back after the busiest prayers, so allow extra time.

During Ramadan and other peak periods, the Saudi authorities control traffic around the Haram, and hotel shuttles have to follow their rules. Routes, drop-off points and times can change at short notice, so check with the hotel close to your dates.

How we checked: each hotel's shuttle and star rating come from the hotel's own page, its brand's announcements or the main booking sites, checked in October 2026. Shuttle frequencies and drop-off points are as listed on HalalBooking unless we say otherwise. Star ratings differ between booking sites, and where they disagree we say so.

5-star hotels with a free shuttle

1. Millennium Makkah Al Naseem

The Millennium is one of two Millennium Hotels properties in the Al Rajhi complex in Al Naseem. When the pair opened, the operator announced a free shuttle to and from the Haram running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Kayak lists it as 5 stars and Expedia as 4, so treat it as an upper 4-star hotel and judge it on recent reviews and photos.

Check prices for Millennium Makkah Al Naseem on Agoda or Trip.com.

2. Le Méridien Towers Makkah

This Marriott hotel is on Kudai Road, south of the Haram. HotelPlanner lists it as a 5-star hotel, and Hotels.com says it holds an official rating from the Saudi Ministry of Tourism. HalalBooking lists a free shuttle every 10 minutes, except at prayer times, dropping at Rea Bakhsh station.

A bus every 10 minutes is one of the most frequent services on this list, which makes it a good pick if you want to go back and forth several times a day.

Check prices for Le Méridien Towers Makkah on Agoda or Trip.com.

3. Park Inn by Radisson Makkah Aziziyah

Hotels.com lists this Aziziyah hotel as 5 stars, which is high for the Park Inn brand, so look at the photos before you book. Radisson's own page lists a complimentary shuttle bus. HalalBooking shows a bus every 60 minutes, except at prayer times, dropping at the King's Gate station by the Kudai car park.

Some booking sites list the shuttle as a paid extra, so ask the hotel to confirm it is free for your stay. It is one of the furthest hotels out on this list, so the journey takes longer.

4. M Hotel Al Dana Makkah by Millennium

This Millennium hotel is on Prince Majed Road in the Ar Rawdah district. Its own description calls it a five-star hotel, while HalalBooking lists it as 4 stars. HalalBooking shows a free shuttle every 60 minutes, except at prayer times, dropping at Bab Ali station.

4-star hotels with a free shuttle

5. Mercure Makkah Aziziah

Accor describes the Mercure as a modern 4-star hotel with 398 rooms and suites. Its own page lists a complimentary 24-hour shuttle to Masjid al-Haram and says the Haram is about 10 minutes away. It is on the Makkah Al Taif Road in Al Jamiah, and its Al Safa restaurant serves buffets at every meal.

The round-the-clock shuttle is the main reason to choose it. If you want to reach the Haram for Fajr or late at night without paying for a taxi, a bus that never stops running makes that much easier.

6. Four Points by Sheraton Makkah Al Naseem

A large Marriott hotel on the Third Ring Road in Al Naseem, behind Al Rajhi Mosque, with 1,136 rooms. Booking sites say the Saudi Ministry of Tourism has rated it 4 stars, and Marriott's own page advertises a free shuttle to Masjid al-Haram.

With that many rooms it suits big families and groups who want everyone under one roof, and Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and use points. Listings also mention two restaurants and free parking.

7. Copthorne Makkah Al Naseem

The Millennium's sister hotel in the same Al Rajhi complex, with 486 rooms, listed as 4 stars. It opened with the same free 24/7 shuttle to the Haram, and HalalBooking now lists a bus every 60 minutes, except at prayer times.

If the Millennium is full or over budget for your dates, look here next: same location, same shuttle.

8. voco Makkah

An IHG hotel listed as 4 stars. Its description on booking sites offers guests a complimentary daily shuttle to and from Al Haram, and says that during Ramadan the shuttle follows the rules set by the Saudi authorities. HalalBooking shows it dropping at Rea Bakhsh station, with buses roughly every hour except at prayer times.

9. Courtyard by Marriott Makkah

Marriott opened its first Courtyard in Makkah in 2024 on Ajyad Street, with 438 rooms including 20 suites, and announced a complimentary 24/7 shuttle. HalalBooking lists it as 4 stars, with a free bus every 30 minutes, except at prayer times, dropping at Shaib Amir station.

It is one of the closer hotels on this list, so the bus ride is short.

10. Makarem Umm Al Qura Hotel

A Makarem hotel on Ajyad Street, listed as 4 stars on HalalBooking, with a free shuttle every 45 minutes, except at prayer times, dropping at Ajyad station. The ride is short, so the total trip to the Haram is one of the quickest here.

11. Novotel Makkah Thakher City

A very large Accor hotel in the Thakher development, listed as 4 stars on Hotels.com, with three restaurants. The hotel's description says modern shuttle buses run to and from Masjid al-Haram around the clock.

Some guests mention a long walk from the drop-off point, so ask the hotel where its bus stops before you book.

Is a shuttle hotel right for you?

A shuttle hotel works well if you are reasonably fit, staying a week or more, and would rather spend your budget on a comfortable room than on the view from the window. It also suits families who need space and a proper breakfast more than a short walk.

Think twice if you are travelling with elderly parents or anyone who uses a wheelchair. The walk from the drop-off point and the wait for the bus back can be hard work in the heat. The same goes for the last ten nights of Ramadan, when crowds and traffic controls make every trip slower.

Some pilgrims split their stay: a few nights close to the Haram for the parts of the trip that matter most to them, and the rest of the stay in a shuttle hotel. Our guide to walking distances near the Haramain can help you work out how close you really need to be.

How to compare prices and book

Search the same dates on more than one site, because prices for the same room often differ. Agoda has a wide choice of Makkah hotels, Trip.com lists a large number of hotels across the city, Hotels.com lets you filter by star rating and guest score, and Expedia can bundle your hotel with flights. Klook is worth a look too, especially if you also want to book activities for your trip.

Before you pay, read the hotel's own description of its shuttle in the listing, then read reviews from the last few months and search them for the word "shuttle". If the timetable matters to you, message the hotel and ask where the bus stops, how often it runs and whether it runs at night.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking on star rating alone. Ratings differ between sites, so check recent photos and reviews.
  • Assuming "free shuttle" means a bus to the mosque door at any hour. Ask where it stops and when it runs.
  • Forgetting the trip back. After Friday prayers and in Ramadan, the queue for the bus back can be long.
  • Choosing a shuttle hotel for an elderly relative without checking the walk from the drop-off point.
  • Leaving the airport transfer to chance. Hotels outside the centre are a longer, less familiar drive from Jeddah, so book your transfer from Jeddah in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Are hotel shuttles in Makkah free?

Many hotels outside walking distance of the Haram include a free shuttle for guests, including the hotels in this guide. A few list it as a paid extra on some sites, so check before you book.

Do Makkah hotel shuttles run 24 hours a day?

Some do. Mercure Makkah Aziziah says its shuttle runs 24 hours. Most others run every 10 to 60 minutes and stop around prayer times.

Where does a Makkah hotel shuttle drop you?

Usually at a bus station near the Haram, such as Rea Bakhsh, Ajyad or the King's Gate station by the Kudai car park, followed by a short walk. Ask the hotel where its bus stops.

Do hotel shuttles run during Ramadan?

Generally yes, but they must follow traffic rules set by the Saudi authorities, so routes and times can change. Check with the hotel close to your travel dates.

Is a 3-star shuttle hotel a good choice for Umrah?

For many pilgrims, yes. A 3-star hotel with a frequent free shuttle, such as ibis Styles Makkah, keeps costs down and still gets you to the Haram easily, as long as you are happy to plan around the bus.
