Distance listings for hotels near Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid An-Nabawi can be deceptive. A hotel described as "5 minutes away" in marketing copy usually means a brisk walk in ideal conditions, not a casual stroll — and conditions in Makkah are rarely ideal once the heat and crowds are factored in.
Why the raw distance isn't the whole story
A hotel 200 metres from the Haram by straight-line distance can still involve a longer walking route once you account for building layout, security checkpoints, and pedestrian paths. That's why we list both the measured distance and our own judgement on whether a hotel is realistically walkable.
When walking distance matters most
If you're travelling with elderly family members, young children, or during the last ten nights of Ramadan when the Haram is at its busiest, a shuttle-served hotel a little further out can actually be more convenient than a "walkable" one that requires navigating dense crowds on foot.
