Hotel Breakfast in Makkah and Madinah: Is It Worth Including?

By the TravAir team · Published

Quick answer: a breakfast-included hotel rate can be good value for Umrah if it covers everyone in your room, fits your mornings and costs a sensible amount more than the same room without meals. Work out the extra cost for the whole stay, then divide it by the breakfasts you will actually eat. Convenience counts too, especially with children or older relatives.

Compare room-only and breakfast rates: Hotels.com | Agoda | Expedia | Makkah hotels on Trip.com | Madinah hotels on Trip.com | Klook

After an early start, sitting down together for breakfast can be one of the best parts of the day. Nobody has to agree on somewhere to eat outside, and anyone who needs a rest afterwards is already back at the hotel.

That might suit your family perfectly. If you prefer a light breakfast and a slow morning, you may enjoy trying somewhere different each day. The right choice depends on your routine, not on the size of the buffet in the photos.

Before you book: the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, which includes Makkah and Madinah, and warns of a heightened threat to airports in the country. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the latest FCDO advice for Saudi Arabia before you book anything, and check it again before you fly.

Start with the room rate, then check the meal

Open the details for the exact room you would book. Keep the hotel, room type, guests, dates, payment terms and taxes the same while you compare meal options. Otherwise the price gap may include an upgrade or other extras as well as breakfast.

Here is what to find out behind each rate label:

Rate shownWhat to checkWhen it could suit you
Room onlyThe total room price, and the separate breakfast price for your groupYou like a light breakfast, want to eat out or will miss several hotel breakfasts
Breakfast includedExactly which adults and children are covered, on which mornings and in which restaurantYou want an easy morning routine and expect to eat there most days
A rate with another meal tooWhich meals, the serving times, the drinks and the guests includedYou also expect to come back to the hotel for that meal

"Breakfast available" only tells you the hotel serves breakfast. It does not tell you whether your rate includes it. Save the meal description with your booking so you can find the wording later.

Compare the same room on Hotels.com and Agoda, then check Expedia. These links open each site's search, so you pick the hotel and meal plan yourself.

Work out the cost of the breakfasts you will eat

Take the room-only total away from the breakfast-included total. Add any breakfast charges for people the rate does not cover. Then divide by the number of mornings your group expects to eat there.

Here is a made-up example to show the sum. It is not a hotel quote or a typical breakfast price in Saudi Arabia:

Four nights, two adults and two childrenExample
Extra cost to include breakfast for all four£168 for the stay
If everyone eats breakfast on four mornings£42 per family breakfast
If an early departure means you only eat on three mornings£56 per family breakfast

In the second case, £56 is what each family breakfast you actually eat costs you. It is not the hotel's advertised breakfast price. The example assumes the rate covers all four people and that the meal is the only difference between the two quotes.

Compare that number with what you would really do instead: pay the hotel's separate breakfast price, or eat at a nearby place whose menu and opening hours you have checked. Include everyone, the drinks and any extra walk. Then decide how much eating in the building is worth to you.

Two hotel examples: what to check

Hilton Suites Jabal Omar Makkah: does the serving time fit your day?

Hilton's dining page lists a breakfast buffet at Al Qandeel from 6.30am to 10.30am, available for a fee. That tells you about the service. Your booking rate still decides whether breakfast is included.

If you plan to come back to the hotel after Fajr, check that day's prayer time and think about when you will want to eat. On the morning you leave, compare the breakfast hours with the time you need to set off. If you are pre-booking a car, for example with Kiwitaxi, pick a time that leaves room for breakfast, or ask the hotel about a packed option. Ask the hotel to confirm the hours for your dates.

To compare rates, search for Hilton Suites Jabal Omar Makkah on Agoda or Trip.com and read the meal terms for the exact room. Check the price on Hilton's own site too.

Pullman Zamzam Madinah: which restaurant does your rate use?

Accor's page for the hotel lists breakfast at Al Mandara and The Horizon from 6.30am to 10.30am, or until 11am on Fridays and Saturdays. It describes a third restaurant, Acacia, as groups only.

So the practical question is which restaurant serves breakfast for your booking. Do not assume every dining room in the photos will be open to you. Confirm the restaurant and its hours for your dates.

Search for Pullman Zamzam Madinah on Trip.com or Hotels.com and check the room, guests and meal plan before you compare totals.

Restaurant hours can change, and neither hotel page tells you what a particular booking includes. Use them as examples of what to ask.

Check what the whole family gets

Enter the children's exact ages when you search, then ask whether the breakfast covers them. A room that sleeps four does not tell you how many breakfasts are included.

Keep your questions to the hotel short and specific:

  • Does this rate include breakfast for every adult and child on the booking?
  • Which restaurant will we use, and what are its hours during our stay?
  • Are there separate charges for children, and what would the total be for our dates?
  • Does breakfast include the drinks we would normally have?
  • If we leave before breakfast, is there an alternative, and does it cost extra?

Ask about the first and last mornings too. If you arrive before check-in, find out whether breakfast that day is extra. If you leave early, ask whether the hotel offers a packed breakfast rather than assuming it does.

Choose food arrangements that suit your family

If you follow particular standards for meat or ingredients, ask the hotel directly. A menu description such as "international buffet" will not tell you, and we have not checked either hotel's food certification.

If someone needs particular food, explain exactly what they need and ask how the kitchen handles requests. Confirm anything to do with allergies with the hotel directly.

For Ramadan dates, ask whether your rate includes suhoor, iftar or another meal, and who it covers. Get the Ramadan meal times rather than relying on the normal breakfast listing.

Your two hotels can have different meal plans

You might want breakfast included in Makkah because you like coming back for a meal and a rest. In Madinah you might prefer to find breakfast as you go. The opposite works just as well. Compare each stay around the mornings you have planned.

Frequently asked questions

Is breakfast always included in a Makkah or Madinah hotel booking?

No. A hotel serving breakfast does not mean your rate includes it. Read the meal terms for the exact rate you book, and check which guests and which mornings it covers.

Is hotel breakfast worth paying extra for during Umrah?

It can be, if your group will eat it most mornings and likes eating at the hotel. Work out the extra cost for the whole stay, divide it by the breakfasts you will eat and compare that with realistic alternatives.

Does a breakfast-included rate cover children automatically?

Not necessarily. Search with the children's exact ages and confirm with the hotel. How many people a room sleeps does not tell you how many breakfasts are included.

Should I book the same meal plan in Makkah and Madinah?

Only if your routine is the same in both cities. Compare the extra cost and convenience for each stay separately, including your arrival and departure times.

Can I add breakfast after booking a room-only rate?

Some hotels sell breakfast separately for a fee. Ask the hotel for the price per person for your dates and compare it with the cost of a breakfast-included rate before you book.
