Hira Cultural District in Makkah: Guide to the Revelation Exhibition and Holy Quran Museum
By the TravAir team · Published

Quick answer: Hira Cultural District is at the foot of Mount Hira (Jabal al-Nour) in Makkah and has two separate museum experiences: the Revelation Exhibition and the Holy Quran Museum. Choose the exhibition for the story of the first revelation and early Islam in Makkah, or the museum for how the Quran was compiled, preserved and printed. Each has its own ticket, from about £7 to £8 per person on GetYourGuide when we checked, and neither includes the climb to the Cave of Hira.
Book tickets: Revelation Exhibition | Holy Quran Museum | Clock Tower Museum
Plan the outing: Makkah tours on GetYourGuide or Klook | Makkah hotels on Trip.com, Agoda or Hotels.com | private cars with Kiwitaxi | a Saudi eSIM from Airalo
If you have time for one cultural outing during Umrah, Hira is a good choice. You get to spend time with the history behind the place, then sit down together afterwards and talk about what you saw.
Start by picking the experience your family is most interested in. The visit does not need to turn into a long list of stops. One exhibition, a break and an unhurried trip back to the hotel can make a very good afternoon.
Before you book: the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, which includes Makkah and Madinah, and warns of a heightened threat to airports in the country. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the latest FCDO advice for Saudi Arabia before you book anything, and check it again before you fly.
Where is Hira Cultural District?
The district is in Makkah's Jabal al-Nour area, at the foot of Mount Hira. According to the district's website, it has the two museum experiences, shops and cafés, and the path up towards the Cave of Hira.
When you arrange transport, give Hira Cultural District as the destination and ask where visitors are dropped off. Save the location on your phone and agree where you will meet for the trip back. That matters more when several relatives are travelling together.
Treat the visit as a separate outing from your hotel. Ask for a journey time from your actual address, because a single "from Makkah" estimate can be well off depending on where you are staying.
Revelation Exhibition or Holy Quran Museum: which should you choose?
The two experiences look at related subjects from different angles. The middle column below is based on the official descriptions. The last column is our suggestion.
| Experience | What it covers | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| Revelation Exhibition | An audiovisual account of the revelation to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and of Makkah in the early days of Islam | You want the story and its historical setting to shape the visit |
| Holy Quran Museum | Interactive halls and rare items covering the revelation, compilation, preservation and printing of the Quran across different eras | You are most interested in the history of the Quran's text and how it has been preserved |
| Both | Two separately ticketed attractions in the same district | Everyone is keen and you can leave time for a break in between |
Sources: the Hira Cultural District website, the ticket listings for the Revelation Exhibition and the Holy Quran Museum, and the Pilgrim Experience Program's June 2026 update on the museum.
The Revelation Exhibition, for the story
The exhibition uses sound and visuals to tell the story of the revelation and of the Makkan community at the start of Islam. You move through it as a sequence of scenes and ideas rather than from one landmark to the next.
For a family, a good starting question is: what would we like to understand better by the end? Let the children pick a question too. Afterwards, give everyone a chance to say which part stayed with them most.
The Holy Quran Museum, for the wider history
The museum covers the compilation, preservation and printing of the Quran through different periods, and the work done to spread it around the world. With its interactive halls and rare items, it is a different visit from the exhibition, not a repeat of it.
It is also popular. In June 2026 the Pilgrim Experience Program said the district had extended its hours because of rising demand at the museum, so booking a time slot ahead is sensible. If this is the part that interests you most, put it first. You do not have to follow the order another itinerary uses.
Tickets and prices
Each attraction has its own ticket, so book the exact one you want to enter. These are the prices GetYourGuide showed in pounds on 27 October 2026:
| Ticket | Price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Revelation Exhibition | From £8 per person | Ticket valid for 2 hours, free cancellation up to 24 hours before |
| Holy Quran Museum | From £7 per person | Allow about 2 hours, free cancellation up to 24 hours before |
"From" means the final price can be higher depending on the ticket type and date, and prices in pounds move with the exchange rate. Check the total before you pay, and do not assume a ticket for one attraction covers the other. Both listings let you reserve now and pay later.
Tip: after you book, the seller emails your actual entry ticket separately from the booking confirmation. Keep that ticket ready to show at the door. A few recent reviewers on GetYourGuide said entrance staff did not accept their voucher, so if that happens, contact GetYourGuide's customer service about a refund. The ticket desk in Hira Cultural District sells tickets on the day as a fallback.
For families, check the ticket rules for children, the language of the presentation and whether entry is timed. If a tour company is arranging the visit, ask whether museum tickets are included in its price.
Check the opening times for your date
The published schedules do not match. The district website and the June 2026 announcement give different hours. Pick an entry time when you book, and confirm it with the venue before you arrange transport.
A simple way to plan the outing
Once your entry time is fixed, set aside a relaxed half-day, including the journey and a break. That is our suggestion, not an official visit length.
- Start with the attraction you care about most, and give it your full attention rather than rushing to the next booking.
- Stop for a drink afterwards and decide together whether everyone wants a second visit.
- Add the second experience only if it suits the group, with its own ticket and entry time.
- Head back at an agreed time, with the pick-up point, driver's details and hotel address all in one place.
The district's shops and services page lists cafés, food outlets and visitor services. If your family has particular food needs, ask the outlet directly.
Add the Clock Tower Museum for a different view of Makkah
If the Hira museums leave you wanting more, the Clock Tower Museum is a very different visit, right beside Masjid al-Haram. It is in the Makkah Clock Tower, part of the Abraj Al Bait complex, and covers astronomy, timekeeping, the history of Makkah and how the area around the Haram has developed, with interactive displays aimed at all ages.
According to the ticket listing, the museum starts on the 47th floor and runs across the top four levels of the tower, directly behind the clock faces. Below the clock, a terrace up to 480 metres high looks down over the Haram, with telescopes to use. Because it is so close to the mosque, it is easy to fit between prayers, unlike Hira, which needs a car.
There are three ticket types, so pick carefully:
- Balcony only: about 20 minutes on the terrace, with photos and telescopes, but no museum.
- Museum: 45 to 60 minutes across the museum floors.
- VIP: fast-track entry, a VIP lounge and balcony access during the visit.
One reviewer booked thinking the balcony ticket included the museum, so read the ticket name before you pay. Children aged 4 to 12 have their own ticket category. On 27 October 2026, Clock Tower Museum tickets on GetYourGuide started from £30 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and the listing was rated 4.7 out of 5 from 30 reviews.
The listing gives opening hours of 9am to 11pm daily, and 2pm to 11pm on Fridays. The entrance is opposite the Southern Courtyard Gate of Masjid al-Haram: go in through the main entrance of the Clock Towers, take the lifts to level P9 and follow the signs. Large bags, food and drinks are not allowed inside. As with the Hira tickets, your entry ticket arrives by email after booking, and that is what you show at the door.
Visit on your own or book a tour?
Going on your own suits a family that wants one attraction and a flexible break. A guided tour suits you better if you want transport and someone to explain the wider history, all arranged together.
Compare what each tour actually includes: the guide's language, time inside the attraction, hotel pick-up, the trip back and whether a mountain walk is part of it. A photo stop outside a museum is not the same as entry to it.
Search Makkah tours on GetYourGuide and Klook, and read each listing's inclusions before you book. For other places worth seeing, our Makkah attractions guide has a wider list. Keep your plans built around the visit you most want, with time for worship and rest around it.
The museums and the climb to the Cave of Hira are separate
The district describes the path to the Cave of Hira as an ascent that starts within the district. That makes it a different activity from the exhibitions at the foot of the mountain.
You can keep the outing to the museums. If someone also wants to climb, plan that part separately, around their fitness, the weather on the day and the operator's guidance. A museum ticket does not include the climb, and even a developed path up the mountain is a demanding climb.
If anyone uses a wheelchair or pushchair, ask the venue about the route from the drop-off point to each entrance, step-free access, seating and toilets before you go.
Before you set off
Save the tickets, the attraction names, your entry time, the pick-up point and the hotel address before you leave. Share the plan with another adult so it is not all on one phone.
Mobile data makes directions and arranging the trip back much easier. Airalo, Yesim and World eSIM (10% off with the code TRAVAIROFF) all sell Saudi Arabia eSIMs. Check that your phone supports eSIM and read the plan's validity and activation rules before you buy. If you would rather have a car booked in advance, Kiwitaxi lets you pre-book a private transfer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Hira Cultural District without climbing to the Cave of Hira?
Yes. The Revelation Exhibition and the Holy Quran Museum are at the foot of Mount Hira, and the path to the cave is a separate activity. You can visit one or both museums without climbing.
Are the Revelation Exhibition and the Holy Quran Museum the same attraction?
No. They are two separate attractions in Hira Cultural District, each with its own ticket. Check the attraction name on your ticket, especially when a tour visits more than one place.
How much are tickets for the Hira Cultural District museums?
On 27 October 2026, GetYourGuide showed Revelation Exhibition tickets from £8 and Holy Quran Museum tickets from £7 per person. Each museum needs its own ticket, and prices change with the date, ticket type and exchange rate.
How long should I allow for a visit to Hira Cultural District?
We suggest a relaxed half-day, including the journey and a break, for one or two museum visits. Allow extra time if anyone also plans to climb towards the Cave of Hira.
Is the Clock Tower Museum part of Hira Cultural District?
No. The Clock Tower Museum is in the Makkah Clock Tower next to Masjid al-Haram, while Hira Cultural District is at Mount Hira. They need separate tickets, and Clock Tower tickets started from £30 per person on GetYourGuide on 27 October 2026.
Can I book a tour that includes Hira Cultural District?
Yes, if the tour lists it. When you search Makkah tours on GetYourGuide or Klook, check that the listing names Hira Cultural District and includes museum entry, hotel pick-up and a guide in your language, because a stop outside is not the same as admission.
