Egypt eSIM Guide for UK Travellers: What to Check Before You Buy
By the TravAir team · Published

Quick answer: an eSIM is the easiest way to have mobile data working when you land in Egypt. Airalo and World eSIM both sell Egypt plans, and World eSIM gives 10% off with the code TRAVAIROFF. Before you pay, check that your phone takes an eSIM and is unlocked, then compare the final price with your UK network's Egypt roaming offer.

What you need depends on the trip. Some people only want enough data to message the driver collecting them, find the hotel and pull up a booking. Others use maps all day, share photos and connect a second device. Those are different purchases, so it pays to work out which one you are making before you look at prices.
This guide covers the checks that matter for an Egypt holiday, whether you are going to Cairo, Luxor or the Red Sea. We have compared what the providers publish; we have not speed-tested their networks across Egypt.
Before you book anything, read the FCDO's Egypt travel advice and regional map. The FCDO warns against travel to some parts of the country, and an eSIM that lists Egypt says nothing about whether a particular journey is advisable.
Start with your phone, not the price
Check that your exact model supports eSIM and that it is unlocked, so it can use another network. On an iPhone, Apple explains how to check under Settings, General, About. For other phones, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
If your phone can't take an eSIM, no discount will fix that. Compare your network's roaming option with a local physical SIM instead.
Next, note your arrival and departure dates, including the day you leave Egypt if you will need data to reach the airport. Then read when each plan starts counting days. Installing an eSIM and starting its paid validity are not always the same thing.
Airalo and World eSIM: the differences to check
| What to check | Airalo | World eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Egypt listed? | Yes, on its Egypt page | Yes, on its Egypt page |
| Plan types | Fixed data and unlimited | Fixed data and unlimited |
| Network | Shown on the plan page; check it for your plan | Check the plan's network before you pay |
| Can you add data? | Check whether your eSIM can be topped up | Only some plans can be topped up, says its Egypt page |
| Price to compare | The final checkout price for your plan | The final checkout price for your dates |
Open Airalo and choose Egypt, or World eSIM and choose Egypt, and compare the same data and days side by side. We haven't quoted a "from" price, because both sites change prices by currency and dates, and a headline figure would be out of date by the time you check out.
Other eSIMs worth comparing
Several other providers sell data for many countries, and one of them may suit your trip better. Check that Egypt is listed and compare the final price for your dates:
- Yesim sells data plans by country and lets you top up your balance.
- Saily, from the team behind NordVPN, is simple to set up in its app.
- GigSky has regional and global plans if Egypt is one stop of several.
- Drimsim charges for the data you use from a balance, which suits light users.
How much data should you choose?
Look at your phone's recent mobile data use as a starting point, then adjust for the holiday. You will probably use more for maps and photos, and less for streaming on the commute.
- If it is mostly maps and messages, a modest fixed allowance is usually enough, with offline maps downloaded and hotel WiFi for anything large.
- If you upload a lot or make video calls home, look at a bigger allowance, and check the high-speed limit on any unlimited plan.
- If a family is sharing one connection, check that the plan allows a hotspot, and think about what happens when the person with that phone heads off somewhere else.
"Unlimited" is worth reading carefully. Airalo's fair-use policy sets a high-speed allowance, after which speeds can drop. Check the figure for your plan, and don't expect unlimited full-speed tethering.
Setting it up without paying for UK roaming
Before you travel, save the provider's setup instructions and check you can sign in to your account. Install the eSIM on a stable WiFi connection, at the time the provider recommends for your plan.
World eSIM's FAQ says activation usually starts when you reach your destination, but some eSIMs start counting from installation. Read your order confirmation rather than assuming.
When you land, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only, keeping it off on your UK line. Check any automatic data switching setting too. If you keep your UK line on for calls or bank texts, ask your network what that costs. Having both lines on doesn't guarantee a bill with no roaming charges. Apple's guide to eSIM when travelling covers using two lines.
Save your hotel address and pick-up details offline as well. Mobile data is handy, but it shouldn't be the only place you keep them.
The TravAir World eSIM discount
World eSIM has given TravAir readers the code TRAVAIROFF for 10% off. We don't know of an expiry date, and we haven't tested it on every Egypt plan, so enter it before you pay and check the saving appears in your final total.
Check World eSIM's Egypt plans with the code, then compare that total with Airalo's Egypt options. A percentage off doesn't mean better value on its own.
Sorting the rest of your Egypt trip
Once your data is sorted, these are the other things most people book before an Egypt holiday:
- Compare flight fares to Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh on Trip.com, Kayak and TravelUp, including baggage and connection times.
- Search hotels for your dates on Agoda, Hotels.com, Trip.com or Expedia, which can also bundle a hotel with your flights.
- Pre-book a car from the airport with Kiwitaxi, after checking your arrival airport is covered.
- Compare guided tours, Nile cruises and Red Sea trips on Klook.
- If you plan to drive, compare car hire companies on DiscoverCars.
- Get a travel insurance quote from Globelink, and check the policy covers Egypt and the activities you plan.
- Compare parking at your UK departure airport with JetPay.
- If your flight is badly delayed or cancelled, AirHelp can check whether you are owed compensation.
For halal food, ask the restaurant or hotel directly, especially where a description is vague. If you need an alcohol-free hotel, ask about that before you book. An eSIM provider listing Egypt isn't an endorsement of any hotel or activity there. Our travel essentials page and airport parking page cover other parts of the journey.
Frequently asked questions
Does an Egypt data eSIM come with a local phone number?
Usually not. The Airalo Egypt plans we looked at were data only. If you need calls and texts as well as internet, check what your chosen plan includes.
Will an eSIM work everywhere in Egypt?
No provider can promise that. Check the plan's network and ask about coverage for your route, especially away from the cities or out at sea.
Can I use it during a stopover in another country?
Only if that country is included. If you plan to leave the airport on a stopover, compare a regional plan with separate country plans.
Can I buy first and check my phone later?
Check first. Read the refund and activation terms before you pay, especially if your travel dates might change.
